My cartographic work reimagines the Indonesian map to focus on specific locations in Java and Sumatra that were detrimentally affected by the May 1998 riots. Cartography positions viewers in a third person perspective, allowing them to observe the aftermath and lasting impact of the riots without being involved in its violence. This shows the distance I feel towards my own Chinese culture and history; part of this distance is due to my inability to speak Chinese fluently. ​
